Taro, that's because your Beamer is tuned to run on premium gas. Same thing with mine and maybe Ted's. You can fill-er-up with regular in a pinch, but the mileage and the performance will suffer, so it's not recommended unless you have no other choice.

As for cars that only require regular octane fuel, they will not get any mileage benefits from premium gas. Trust me, I tried with my old Ford Taurus. Best to always fill up your car with the minimum octane suggested by the manufacturer.
