Such bull! The East German academics were extremely well educated, second to none actually and never had a problem finding a job in the West when their previous companies folded.

The advanced fine mechanical, optical and even semiconductor industry in East Germany were up to any levels of their competitors in the West. These were also acquired within the West German official fire sales program by their former competitors in the West.

What was real backwards as described you, in many cases operating at 1950 standards, was the heavy industry, most of which only survives in the West while heavily subsidized.

The people, who used to work in these thread wheel operations thus were left without any hopes for a job anytime in their life.
Not necessary either because West Germany relies on heavy welfare as opposed to serious re-educational efforts and programs like for instance in Sweden.

You buddies in West Germany seem to suffer from that West German syndrome, that "they are all dumb and lazy anyway, good for nothing and thus we must pay for them".
The most common German excuse in use for the sad state of the current German economy.
Rather than pointing the fingers in the right direction of the total mismanagement by incompetent and irresponsible German politicians for the last 20 years at least.
