Punko: Couldn't agree with you more about consumer rebellion at the PC upgrade cycle. <People who've shelled out $2000 for a pentium 200 pc just 9 months ago are not happy about the fact that the same box costs under $1000 now, and that they will probably need to replace it in two years with another $2000 box if they want to run that new generation of 64 bit software. I think consumers will be very open to alternate models, and much more so if bandwidth provides additional possibilities.>

We've got PC disinflation, which people fail to see because they think it is the old 'wait six months and get a Better PC for $2500'. I'm sitting on a big options bet (Dell and Gateway) that the very inflated box maker stocks are going to take a big hit.

Two new pieces of evidence today. First is an ongoing survey of electronics purchases. The PC buying and intent to buy PCs plummted last week. Of course. With prices dropping like rocks you would be a fool to buy anything at the moment. The other is a story in the NYT about cable companies working with Scientific Atlanta and Motorola to give out free set top boxes and connect people to the Net through cable at high speeds using the vertical blanking interval. This is pitched as a direct challenge to MSFT and Web TV. Perlman of Web TV comes right back and says that they are announcing a 'major new technology' next week for Web TV.

Oooooh, this is getting fun. Anyone want to join me in those Dell puts?
