The effect on the troops and the enemy are secondary to speaking out and saying what you believe.

I disagree. The troops are already in harms way. Giving aid and comfort to the enemy does nothing to help our troops. And I do not believe this is a secondary issue.

You describe the remarks as derogatory because your bias says it is wrong express these views.

So the remarks from say Dick Durbin in which he equates Gitmo to the atrocities of Nazi Germany are ok with you, right? He is, after all speaking his mind. Sorry, but bias has nothing to do with this.

When I hear the politicians speak I hear them telling it like it is.

You are incredibly naive if you believe this. Remember that a politician's number one objective is to get re-elected, not to serve his/her constituents.

So I sit back and keep quiet and the war lasts 5 more years another 1500 soldiers will die. If I speak up and the war ends in 2 years then only 500 soldiers will die. If I believe this war is wrong I have an obligation to those other 1000 soldiers.

You have no proof that this will happen. You are merely setting up a straw man to bolster your weak argument.

If you don't understand this as a basic american right of free speech...Well I shrug and find that incomprehensible.

I have no problem with free speech. I do have a problem, however, when the alleged free speech borders on sedition.
