From what I've observed, that's perfectly true. In fact, one doesn't even need 20:20 vision to see that the poor and working-class whites would rather vote for a right-wing government -- which will screw them economically -- than a leftist one if that meant being tolerant of gays and blacks.
Clinton was actually a very good president for the poor, including the whites, probably the best they'll have this generation, but the American electorate couldn't tolerate his fondness for blacks and his permissiveness. In fact, he's lucky that he got off with a dishonorable discharge!! and that some madman didn't kill him. Even today, years after he left the job, one can read, at SI, people gloating about his shortcomings and blaming him for 9-11. Reminds me of my "friends", the ANC, who continually attribute any problem in SA to the apartheid regime -- which went out of power over ten years ago. |
