OT: Rita

Austin is a much bigger city tonight than it was a few days ago, as Rita evacuees arrive by the thousands. I've heard some grocery stores have been picked clean (happily, I made my regular trip a few days ago, so we're in relatively good shape). Traffic from Houston is apparently moving at the breakneck speed of about 8 mph average, with many sections of road moving below 3 mph. And I'm talking about the entire 180 mile +/- distance -- what could once be traveled in about 3 hours now takes over 20 hours.

There's not an empty hotel or motel room within 200 miles of Houston, and shelters are filling fast. School districts have canceled classes so their school buildings can be used as shelters.

I haven't seen anything like this since Alicia over 20 years ago.

JMHO.
