Hurricanes delay gas pipeline agreement

Anchorage, Alaska - It now turns out that hurricanes Rita and Katrina were so severe, they even cast their long shadows over the state of Alaska.

Tonight at a meeting of the pro oil and gas group called The Alliance, Gov. Frank Murkowski told 250 business men and women he had hoped to announce an agreement on the long-awaited North Slope gas pipeline.

But, the governor said today, as he was waiting to hear from oil and gas executives in Houston, he learned that the city had been evacuated.

“Unfortunately, gentlemen, a couple of ladies -- named Rita and Katrina -- have appeared and they have joined forces to confound our efforts to bring this project to a speedy conclusion,” said Murkowski.

The governor says he's prepared to give the North Slope producers a short period to recover from the back-to-back hurricanes. His press secretary says that means weeks rather than months.

Murkowski hopes to bring a natural gas pipeline proposal before a special session of the Alaska Legislature sometime in the next three months.
