How long before the price of gasoline makes it desirable again?

the speed limits were reduced here a long while ago,
both to reduce gas consumption and emissions,
but also for safety reasons.

can't remember how long ago i read this, but i think on
Medscape News, there were a couple of studies posted
of the differences in car accident and survival of crash rates
when speed limits are around 50 to 55 mph.
most studies found that there were way less accidents
and much better survival statistics.
funny now because i drove back when the speed limit was
60 just about everywhere, and now, after years of driving
mostly at 50, i don't enjoy traveling at 60... seems just
a bit too fast. too easy to make a mistake and end up
in the ditch, especially on our more winding or hilly highways.
