[Flat tax in the US....] "But will they do it?" IMO, only when a huge financial crisis forces the hands of our politicians. They will fight true reform for as long as they can. "IMO the VAT is just about the worst system of taxation devised." I agree. It is far too easy to HIDE the amount of taxation on a product or service from the consumer, from the public --- which makes it far to easy to RAISE taxes. The only thing I can imagine that would be worse would be to combine our current corrupted and loophole-ridden income tax system with a VAT. That would be a monsterous combination, inserting massively complicated systems (and their accompanying paperwork requirements and compliance costs) into every nook and cranny of the economy... expanding the power of the government (& of unelected bureaucrats) tremendously.
