IMO, only when a huge financial crisis forces the hands of our politicians. They will fight true reform for as long as they can.

I agree. It is far too easy to HIDE the amount of taxation on a product or service from the consumer, from the public --- which makes it far to easy to RAISE taxes.

The only thing I can imagine that would be *worse* would be to combine our current corrupted and loophole-ridden income tax system with a VAT. That would be a monsterous combination, inserting massively complicated systems (and their accompanying paperwork requirements and compliance costs) into every nook and cranny of the economy... expanding the power of the government (& of unelected bureaucrats) tremendously.
