The following is all MO but believe you will find its all generally correct.

First, the hit rate (degree of detection any given program demonstrates against the known universe of baddies) for any single program is amazingly low.

Second, program A may detect 30% and program B also has a hit rate of 30% BUT perhaps each detects 5% that the other does not and the other 25% is overlap.

Three, a well protected system not only has multiple "virus protection" but has other security measures also.

A starting foundation is switching your browser from IE to Firefox; then add the FF extension Adlbock Plus to eliminate annoying ads; then add No Script extension to allow you enable or disable Java on various sites (Java is the frequently used highway that baddies ride into your PC).

Now add a SW firewall such as ZoneAlarm free which will assist in BLOCKING sneak attacks; add to this two free REALtime virus BLOCKERS in AVG and AVAST! which will coexist nicely without any conflicts.

Lastly, add Hitman Pro which is a free GUI wrapper of 6 popular programs for trojans, virus etc: Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, and several others ... this is a very nice one click runs all of em starting with checking and DLing any updates and then sequentially running each ... all with just your one click to start the program.

Avast! also has a scanner that will run during boot which circumvents some of the baddies which defeat the curative powers of your programs (they have not been loaded yet so they cannot over ride your checkers/blockers) ... this must be manually selected to run.

I use all of the above and run those requiring manual startup daily.
