Kirk: Great post. I would only add that, by most accounts, the
supply problem seems not to echo the manufactured oil/petrol
supply "crisis" of the 1970's. At that time, leviathan oil tankers
laden with cargo anchored off the coastlines of the USA even
as Big Oil shut down its off-shore operations in the Gulf of
Mexico.

Reportedly, manufacturers of small LCD screens and the component
micro-chips used in virtual pets were genuinely caught short by the
Gargantuan demand and have been stoking up their operations to
satisfy the public's appetite for these little electronic beasties.
