Good news or bad news:

* MOTOROLA INC Messaging Systems Products Group announced
September orders for FLEX protocol-based pagers bring the
cumulative number of units shipped to a milestone of 20 million
since production began in January 1995. The dramatic success of
FLEX technology for paging carriers worldwide led the tremendous
demand for Motorola's advanced paging devices. Motorola's global
shipments of FLEX protocol-based pagers have increased
exponentially from 1,000 in January of 1995 to more than 1 million
per month in 1997, making FLEX the most rapidly adopted paging
protocol in history. (PR Newswire 08:00 AM ET 09/11/97) For the

* After market close, MOTOROLA INC's stunned Wall Street by
telling investors its 3Q results will be significantly below
analysts' expectations due to weakness in two of the world's
biggest pager markets and a one-time charge of $95 million to
discontinue its APPLE COMPUTER Macintosh clone business. Analysts'
mean estimates were $0.60, according to First Call. Motorola said
the pager market in China is experiencing a larger-than-normal
seasonal downturn and that the U.S. pager market continues to
struggle with inventory problems. Both of these factors could
continue into the 4Q, the company said. (Reuters 05:17 PM ET
