"the loss in trust units is $8 billion or more". I'm sorry I have to revisit this question, but the fact remains that not one dollar has been "lost". The market has no mechanism for creating or destroying dollars. It obeys a conservation law as absolute as those of physics. Dollars into the market equal dollars leaving the market (some leave in the pockets of brokers as commissions). If you follow the money, as opposed to looking at quotes, you will see why this is so.
