Blood test for Alzheimer's
(Filed: 25/09/2005)

A simple blood test that can detect Alzheimer's disease has been developed.

The breakthrough, which identifies the illness by its genetic fingerprint, is claimed to be the first definitive test and could help doctors to delay the onset of symptoms.

Previously doctors have struggled to identify Alzheimer's through memory tests and by ruling out other possibilities. Even then only a post-mortem examination can confirm a diagnosis.

The new test was devised by scientists at the Norwegian biotechnology firm DiaGenic ASA and at Ullevål University Hospital in Oslo.
