Baird,

I am a bit familiar with the software. In terms of the analytics that it provides, it's miles ahead of everyone else. Pretty much any self-respecting investment manager has to buy Barra software to do the kinds of portfolio analysis that investment consultants want to know about. As software, its usability is not so good. The UI is a bit clunky, and because of the sophisticated concepts that it deals with, the documentation would have to be excellent, but it isn't.

The interesting thing is that I think most people who buy the software rarely use it. They just want to have it on hand because they know it has the best analytics. Barra is really a financial analysis company that sells software, not a software company as such.

As to the volatility of earnings, I think all these acquisitions will help to smooth things out in the long run. The consulting business would have very steady earnings I think, and the diversification will also do a lot to smooth things out (one business will likely do well when another is having a bad quarter).
