Hillary Veers Right
On Friday we noted that Sen. Hillary Clinton seemed to have taken a hard turn to the left last week. She announced that she was going to vote against Chief Justice-designate John Roberts, and she held a meeting with hate-harpy Cindy Sheehan. On Friday night, however, she took a step back toward the center when, as the New York Post reports, she "dealt a crushing blow to the International Freedom Center planned for Ground Zero, saying she wants the project canned for failing to listen to the 9/11 families."

Both sides in the debate over the IFC have been represented on The Wall Street Journal editorial page and hence on this Web site: Debra Burlingame, the activist whose pilot brother was murdered at the Pentagon, argued that the IFC would end up serving as a forum for anti-American views, while IFC head Dick Tofel offered assurances that it wouldn't. For more, see TakeBacktheMemorial.org and the IFC's "Myths and Facts" page.

The New York Times editorial page has been waging a bizarre McCarthyite campaign in favor of the IFC, even declaring in July that dissent was "un-American." But among the dissenters are New York City's police and fire unions, which represent a lot more voters than the Times editorial page does. Mrs. Clinton's decision to break with the left on an issue that has little popular resonance looks like another astute political move.

The Great Ground Zero Heist
Will the 9/11 "memorial" have more about Abu Ghraib than New York's heroic firemen?
