I would guess that most people who oppose the US role in Iraq don't oppose the state per se; they see Iraq as an unnecessary waste of lives and resources that could be better used at home.

I agree that the perspective you're describing accounts for most such people, and it's my assertion that they are equally as stupid and only a bit less immoral than the warmongers.

I am more intrigued by those who made their careers preaching against the government, while they were mostly in the minority, then became huge fans of soaring government spendings (and deficit-fueled tax cuts which amount to the same thing) when they could steer the goodies their own way.

I don't know that I'd call the type that you're describing "intrigu[ing]", personally, but find them quite eclectic, spanning from former business executives to former 'Black Panthers'.
