Yep. and then their Empires became overextended, the fiscal base unable to support the military expenses, and they fell... 'hollowed-out' from the inside.

This process seems to be moving faster and faster in recent histories.

Yep, I do. Don't forget that the navy alone wasn't sufficient to achieve victory... a land force trekked overland a great distance to complete the trap. This was the beginnings of our Marines....
