But there is no doubt that the connections of a former UN ambassador and RNC chair would serve the son well in his application to Harvard.

There is no place on the application to graduate school where one puts "father's profession". Whether somebody on the admissions committee brought that to the picture as they were individually reviewing the application is up to them.
