I have a hard time believing that the decline into May 2004 low was an impulse. In any case, if the index takes out the 2003 top - just about 10 points away - that would clear up this issue.

I always felt that pattern which developed after the 2003 $HUI top was similar to the one which followed the June 2002 high. Not sure what to make of it.
