What is a major hurricane?

How was a major hurricane defined in the 1800s? In the 1980s and 1990s?

What were the average sea temperatures in the 1800s?

How reliable are the measurements made way back then?

There are tons of similar questions one can ask which are not answered or even mentioned in the blogger's highly unscientific comment.

To say that the blog comment proves or disproves anything worthwhile is really quite a stretch.

The whole global warming argument is difficult in the extreme. Good arguments pro and con can be made either way. The problem is that the issue has been politicized to a very large degree. Science should be apolitical.

I personally think both sides of the debate are correct. I think the data indicating appx. 1 degree F increase in average temperature over the last century is essentially irrefutable.

But I obviously cannot prove my point that the causes are multifaceted to any degree of certainty the cause any more than the blogger Lindy cited can disprove it.

I think that while it is unlikely that the natural causes of global warming can be affected through human intervention, those that are dependent on human activity can be dealt with to some degree, chiefly by reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

I also think that reducing our dependence on foreign oil by reducing our consumption of it is good politics, good economics, and probably good for our environment. In fact, doing so ought to be one of the major policy goals of any Administration. None in the past 40 years have done anything worthwhile in this regard.
