Gus > According to French geneticist Albert Jacquard(*) the very notion of genetic categories within the human race is itself unscientific:
Amazing, but I'm in no position to argue. In fact, I can't even read the article as I know little French.
But apart from that, the debate was not over the correctness of the scientific theory itself but that religion has trumped science. This is going back to the Dark Ages -- to Galileo --and, in fact, is something that all thinking people should be seriously concerned about. To ask scientists to tear the pages out out of a journal --- that's like burning books. These are Nazis -- and they have won the battle.
This is a battle for ideas and minds and, indeed, a battle which most people who take liberty, science and common law for granted don't even know about. Clearly, there is a profound reactionary movement taking place which is bent on throwing the non-religious basis of thought out of the window. I refer, of course, to religious fundamentalism, and not necessarily Islamic fundamentalism, but the fundamentalism which is now embracing, perhaps I should say infecting, all religions. These people believe that myth and superstition -- and in their terms ie their myths and their superstitions -- must once again take precedence over common law and science and are thus intent on destroying the very cornerstones of our civilization and way of life.
It's hard to believe that this is actually going on in 2005. |
