An aside on the Civil War....last night I was researching the battle a 2 Great Uncle fought in, was wounded and died. A Union man, not married, died young at 24 years....I have a series of 7 letters he wrote to my 2 Great Grandmother of his experiences.....one can almost feel the bullets whistling by their heads in one of the letters. He was a peaceful man, and didn't like war. However, he realized he had to go, because he wanted to keep the United States as one entity, and feared if the North didn't win, it would not stay the great Country that it was.
Found yesterday he was in the 32nd Regiment Illinois from Iowa, and fought in several places, last being Pleasant Hill, LA along the Red River. Wounded April 8, 1864, taken a POW, and evidently died the next day. I'm trying to find out where he was buried. Nothing like living history to make one start asking more questions.... |
