I wonder how long ago the picnic was. WFR was affected by a wafer surplus which reduced their business. Being a german company and not interested in short term stock market performance they elected to keep all of their employees even though they didn't need them then. This of course resulted in idle workers, and losses. AMAT on the other hand, laid off as many as possible and stayed in the black.

WFR is experiencing increased demand and slowly improving margins. This quarter will also be ugly, but Q4 should improve. First call has 1998 as $2.48 earnings, and I believe that 1999 will be about $3.60, with 2000 over $4. At 31 they are selling at 12.5x forward earnings, still a bargain in my opinion.

Thanks for the info,

Carl
