Bicycle sales boom in US amid rising gas prices

Sat Oct 1, 9:15 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - More bicycles than cars have been sold in the United States over the past 12 months, with rising gas prices prompting commuters to opt for two wheels instead of four.

Not since the oil crisis of 1973 have bicycles sold in such big numbers, according to Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong, an industry association.

news.yahoo.com

Bicycles have been pretty big in my area for a long time.
i'd attribute much of that to the excellent system of
paved bike paths that wind all through the city of Ottawa
along the canal. When i was at university, many students
rode bikes as they could get from apartments downtown
to the university campus much faster on a bike than by
car or on a bus. The hardier ones skated on the canal
in winter as it runs right by the campus.

if more resources were geared towards creating safe bike routes
i'm quite sure that more people would ride bikes. the biggest
problem (as i see it) is that most highways and large boulevards
are extremely unsafe for cyclists. unfortunately, unless
bike routes are planned into road design, it's often difficult
to find a route that you don't have to spend at least part
of your trip riding in hazardous traffic.

Interesting that, in the above article, it mentions:

The US government has also done its part to promote a more bicycle-friendly environment. Some 3.5 million dollars in federal money has been set aside to create cycling trails over the next four years.

For the whole U.S.?? That amount seems ridiculously low.
Think how many bike paths and routes could be built with
what's being spent on Iraq in just one day. Multiply
that by a week or a month, and hell, there could be safe
bike routes all over and people would be saving money being
frittered away buying oil from the M.E.

Imagine there's no heaven.. it's easy if you try...
