I doubt I have ever said anything quite so foolish, as winning the Iraq "war"* has never been even a remote possibility.
However, if, for the sake or argument, it was ever even remotely possible for the U.S. to "win" in Iraq, I would consider that result to be the greatest of all possible disasters, as it would set all of the world's civilized nations (but for Israel) against us for decades to come.
I believe the best possible resolution is exactly what we are getting ... those who pushed us into the war are winding up with egg on their faces, and those who opposed the war from the start have been shown to be remarkably prescient.
This best possible result has come about at great cost in terms of both dollars and human lives, as those of us who were against the war predicted, with remarkable accuracy, well before the invasion of Iraq.
So, if everyone had just listened to the likes of me there would be tens of thousands fewer deaths, the U.S. would be a couple of hundred billion dollars less in debt, and the rest of the world would not be aghast at our behavior.
*I use parenthesis because what we have done in Iraq is not so much waging a war as engaging in a mugging. |
