Re: What's spinning out of control is Europe's refusal to let Turkey into the EU? Is it racism or simply business as usual? I think its a little bit of both.

Turkey? Most Austrians say no

You are correct: it's a mix of Islamophobia and anti-immigrant misgivings.... However, let's not blame Austria alone for the deadlock. Here's my take on the issue:

Hence my opinion that Austria is merely playing the lightning rod and willing to take all the flak so as to spare the real anti-Turkish cabalists....

Turkey, in my opinion, should have joined the EU on May 1st 2004 together with Poland, Hungary, the Baltic Republics, etc. Only two countries have a keen, if unavowed, interest in keeping Turkey out in the cold: the US and Israel. I guess that's why many EU politicians openly opposed to Turkey's EU membership are at the same time fervent Zionists and/or big fans of G. W. Bush and/or Jewish: Nicolas Sarkozy(FR), Laurent Fabius(FR), Angela Merkel(GER), Philippe Dewinter(BEL), etc. Of course, Britain is the obvious --too obvious perhaps?-- exception.
