Not because they're somehow genetically predispositioned to do so, but because of many other factors totally controllable by society.

Bennett's problem is the assumption that everyone will reach as pragmatic a conclusion as the one above...hence the practically bylateral assault on what he said. His inability to say that it was a careless remark is consistent with his defense of his gambling skills after the publication of his "book of virtues". Obsessive gambling is only a virtue in his defensive mind.
