<I want to know where in the brain basic mathematical ability resides and where in the brain mathematical genius resides. I want to know how those are linked to the sex of the individual and if they are related at all to environmental influences.>

Geode, okay, you've tempted me to a quick note. Mathematical genius is not located in most brains. It's like looking in Homer Simpson's brain. It's hollow in the mathematical genius department. Mathematical genius includes the ability to ponder variables affecting an issue, such as the effects of early puberty.

The sex of the individual matters because women's brains mature three years younger than males. Which I dare say you've noticed me say several times, yet you ignore that. As Winston Churchill said, sometimes people stumble over the truth, but they pick themselves up and hurry on as though nothing happened.

Environmental influence? Well, foetal beginnings are female, they say, and the Y chromosome kicks in at 2 months or some time and mitochondria are up to no good too. So there's something going on there if you want to find the origins of the difference. I'm not sure if that's "environmental".
