Geoff, I don't question your approval of the motives offered for our actions in Iraq. In addition, I don't question your acceptance of the rationale that we had "bad wmd information." Finally, I don't question your hope that there might still be a "good outcome."

What I do question is the use of arguably benevolent motives, a constant stream of excuses and dim hope to justify this action when the hard, cold, brutal facts are that the politics, culture and recent history of Iraq compels recognition that we're betting the farm on a sucker bet, and our young men and women are paying off with their lives. If I'm wrong I'd like to hear the reasons why we should have cause to hope that we'll "win" a "softer more tolerant version of Islam" or "some form of democratic form of gov't" or a "redistribution of wealth" or an expanded "rift between radical Islam...and the larger and more moderate side of the faith." Because, frankly, the fires we've lit seem to be burning in the wrong direction.

Take a look at the long article posted a few posts below yours. It's hard to disagree with most of that assessment. It's filled with sad truths and when men and women are dying in our name we should at least acknowledge the truths. We do cost/benefit analysis that takes into account the risks on almost everything else, why not Iraq? Ed
