>>I liked best Chamonix...<<

I haven't yet been to Chamonix during ski season, but I did go in July, 2004 for a Mont Blanc hiking trip. The circuit started and ended in Chamonix. Had a fantastic time. The scenery was breathtaking.

Did you by any chance stay at the Hotel Hameau Albert 1er? I had a pretty memorable dinner at the restaurant there. Thirteen courses if I recall. Good thing it was a hiking trip. <g> The rest of my meals were a little more relaxed!

In addition to the fantastic hiking -- what I liked most about Chamonix was just the general vibe of the place. Very laid-back and friendly. I wouldn't have minded spending more time there. My hiking guide for a trip I did in the Dolomites lives in Chamonix with his wife (who, coincidently, used to work at Whistler!).

There are two hiking routes I'd like to do that originate in Chamonix. One is called the GR-5 (Mont Blanc to Menton). It starts in Chamonix, and it can be done in sections, or, if one has the time, in its entirety. I have a friend who did half of it last summer and spoke very favorably about it. The other is probably more well known: the Haute Route, which also starts in Chamonix and crosses into Switzerland -- eventually ending up in Zermatt. From what I understand, the Haute Route can get a little dicey -- so a hiking guide is recommended for that one.

During my Mont Blanc trip, snow conditions made the Fenetre D'Arpette too dangerous to hike. The Bovine Trail is the alternate trail for that section of the circuit. While the Bovine Trail was very beautiful (and appropriately named), I was a little disappointed not to be able to tackle the Fenetre after having heard so much about it. Apparently the Fenetre D'Arpette can also be hiked at the beginning of the Haute Route -- so I suppose I'll have another chance one of these days. One thing that made me laugh about the Fenetre D'Arpette: I got warnings from a slew of people that if I ever wanted to hike it -- I better lighten up my daypack. I tend to carry around the kitchen sink on my back, so when the time comes -- I guess I'll have to discard a few items. <g>

By the way, Courmayer was also a nice stop along the Mont Blanc route. Very picturesque town. Spent an extra night there -- my muscles definitely needed it!
