The couple of times I went to Whistler, the conditions were, actually, pretty good. My first trip was probably about 15 years ago - in April. Was a strange experience, actually - it was as hot as in the summer. In the morning the snow was a bit icy, and by 1 pm or so it would become slushy... but in between, it was great.

About North East... None of the ski mountains here are truly what one would call destination resorts. But they are mostly within a driving distance, and generally fully serviceable and fun.

Skiing in Europe is - among other things - a good way to get to know the place. If you go when you can avoid school vacations and major holidays, it is actually fun to rent a car and travel to different countries and places. Snow conditions in the Alps are less reliable than in the Rockies, but this is a problem with any place where you are not at great elevations.
