Yes, the Haute Route takes about ten days to two weeks depending on whether one incorporates rest days, etc. Hiking is done from hotel to hotel. In some of the remote areas, the options are more limited, i.e., mountain refuges.

This type of extended hike can be done in various ways. Some folks take one pack and carry it from place to place, map in hand. Others carry a daypack and hire shuttle services to deliver gear/luggage from place to place. This type of delivery service is available for some of the more well-known hikes in the Alps. Alternatively, there are companies that can arrange the whole hike from start to finish (either independently or with a group). These types of services run the gamut from very basic to ultra-luxurious. Pretty much depends on the type of experience one is looking for.

In general, these extended hikes are considerably easier in Europe than they might be in other locales. Hiking is extremely popular in the Alps, and the trails are well-marked and well-maintained. Most of these long hikes can be done without ever having to camp. Kind of amazing that these distances can be covered in relative comfort (and even luxury).
