Wrong. Kerry almost won. And if Dean had been nominated he'd have lost by a landslide. If there had been a stronger candidate than Kerry in 2004 he would have been nominated. There wasn't. Kerry had huge hurdles to leap and tried his best in a short time. In the end, he was barely beaten by gross election fraud, phony terrorist alerts and an outrageous wall-to-wall smear campaign which the press gave more than equal time to, for some ungodly reason.

No war-time president has ever lost re-election. Another factoid for you. Nixon in 1972 won by 20% even though most people hated the Vietnam War and blamed him for a lot of it.
