Iraq has become a magnet for Islamic militants similar to Soviet-occupied Afghanistan two decades ago, U.S. and Arab security officials say.

Funny.. On my end I'm seeing a damn good portion of Zarqawi's leadership network, people who trained with him since his days in Afghanistan, wrapped up, or eliminated.

And sure, people keep poking up their heads to replace the ones we're eliminating, but they are FAR LESS capable than their predecessors.

Example in point.. The Mosul network has been effectively dismantled since the capture of Abu Talha. His sub-commanders continue to be rolled up and they have fallen on "hard times" when it comes to raising money, or finding recruits.

One of the things that HAS BEEN DERIVED from this experience in Iraq is that there is NOW a more complete understanding that MUSLIMS are just as likely to be targeted by these Islamic Militants as Westerners.

So yeah.. some Islamists can now go back to their home countries and make the claim "I waged Jihad against the Great Satan", but there are far more Arabs who have watched events and seen the public calls by Zarqawi clammering for civil war between Shi'ites and Sunnis that will likely have more resonance upon them in opposing the fanatics in their midst, lest their own countries be turned into another Iraq.

That has definitely changed the perception of Arab people throughout the region.
