If you are speaking to men and women you don't address everyone as "Sir". If you are addressing a group of people and they have a wide range of beliefs, why is it in appropriate to use a non-denominational phrase to wish them a "Happy Holiday"? Shall we tell the Jewish people to have a "Merry Christmas"?

I don't understand why you say it is hostile to want to include others. It seems more hostile to all other religions and beliefs to want them to accept your ways.

I would agree that having legislation about "Merry Christmas" is ridiculous as there are many other more important issues to deal with. But the separation of church and state is no small matter and is another area that the founding fathers saw where a group could wield inordinate power over others. Freedom of religion is important. As an individual you are welcome to worship however you see fit. But when you act for the group as a govt official you have to be neutral. The founding fathers were greatly concerned with majorities tyrannizing the minority and a minority exercising undue power over a majority. It is what the balance of power is all about. To this day we continue to fine tune that process. Sometimes we go to far, but that is a necessary part of the process.
