The following article, from JapanBizTech, is consistent with a prior post from Bloomberg, dated 8/25, in which ASND spoke of dramatically rising Asian sales. If anyone needs a reference to the Bloomberg piece, let me know.
Taiwan PC Buyers Focus on Accessing Internet
TAIPEI -- According to a survey conducted at an information technology exhibition here, 63.8 percent of those who do not have a PC at home but plan to buy one soon said they will use PCs to access the Internet.
Other respondents cited learning-related applications (57.5 percent), word processing (45.4 percent), entertainment (41 percent), doing homework (28.6 percent), and performing office work at home (21.1 percent). Multiple answers were given.
In a similar survey conducted in early 1996 respondents put learning at the top of the ranking.
In the latest survey, those who favored desktop PCs ranked the following reasons in order of interest: accessing the Internet, computer-related learning, entertainment and doing homework. Those favoring notebook PCs listed the Internet, word processing, entertainment and doing office work at home.
Because notebook PCs are still significantly more expensive than desktops, most people planning to purchase a notebook PC have stable incomes.
