Peter, When you say "great plains", are you talking about a city, or the area of the plains. I ask because I was born in central Kansas, but was taken away at 18 months old. I still have relatives that live in different parts of Kansas, but don't get there very much any more.
Of course, the name "red neck" referred to farm people because of the redness on the nape of the neck from working in the fields, and then was made to consider any one that worked in the sun to make a living. I did know a lot of farm folks. We moved to Houston, TX in January of 1942, but when I was 14, I was shipped to Stockton, KS where my uncle harvested his own wheat, and then we went custom cutting for the 3 months of summer. Started in the panhandle of Texas, and ended up in Nebraska. The photo on my profile was taken on the farm when I was still a young whipper snapper.
Some German was spoken around Stockton, but when we moved to a small town in south central Texas, it was common to hear German and Polish spoken on the streets in town. And, of course, every Texan has to learn a bit of Spanish.
I don't really trust any politician either, and no statesmen are around any more, but I will vote for the lesser of the evils because if we don't vote, we give up our right to bitch about the government. |
