EDISON, N.J. (AP) - Thirteen middle-school students at Our Lady of Peace School were treated Tuesday for what authorities believe was carbon monoxide exposure.

The school will be closed Wednesday while a hazardous materials team and health authorities inspect the buildings, said Joanne Ward, spokeswoman for the Diocese of Metuchen.

Ward said the school's seventh- and eight-graders were heading to lunch in the basement cafeteria of one of the school's two buildings when two girls said they felt unwell. The two began vomiting before they had eaten, Ward said. Initially, officials thought the children may have been sickened by food.

Students and faculty were evacuated from the building, but hazmat workers did not find any immediate problems, Ward said.

Thirteen children were treated and released from area hospitals, including eight youngsters ages 11 to 13 who were seen at JFK Medical Center, spokesman Rob Cavanaugh said. He said their symptoms were consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning.
