Warning of New York subway threat
Security is being increased on New York's underground railway network after what city officials called a "credible security threat".

Announcing the move, New York police chief Raymond Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the threat was specific and related to the next few days.

Mr Bloomberg said it originated from overseas, without giving more details.

In response, the authorities say they are deploying additional police and dogs to patrol the vast network.

The mayor said that along with the additional police patrols and increased random bag checks already being implemented, the city's critical response teams were also directing their attention to the transport system.

He tried to assure New Yorkers that everything possible was being done to keep them safe.

"I want to assure New Yorkers that we have done and will continue to do everything we can to secure this city," Mr Bloomberg said.

Different in nature

"This is the first time we have had a threat with this level of specificity," Mr Bloomberg said at a news briefing.

He said the threat was more specific "as to target and timing".

Mr Kelly added that authorities had received warning of a "possible terror attack in the coming days".

He said that already the terror plan had been "partially disrupted" by the additional measures being put in place.

He said that while security would be increased throughout the transport system, the city's threat level would remain at "orange" - the second highest level of alert and the level it has been since the attacks on the city's World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.

The authorities refused to give more details, saying the information was classified.

An estimated 4.5m people use the New York subway every weekday.

The system has more than 468 subway stations.
