But blacks aren't expected to sit in the back of the bus and to make themselves as invisible as possible any more. If they do come to the attention of whites, they aren't expected to be as subservient as possible or risk, at a minimum, a dressing down if not out right assault.

Could things be better? Sure they could. But they aren't at the point that cripples the ability of blacks to improve their lives like it used to. In my neighborhood you can see blacks, whites and hispanics hanging out and talking with each other. That wouldn't have been the case 40 or 50 years ago.

I understand what you mean. There has been visible progress....its fairly evident. But you have to wonder how deep that progress runs if a white person is thinking nigger when talking to a black person.
