well, I am old but didn't live in the haydays of these problems. That was back in the 20s and 30s.

But yes, I know of this because in a novel by one of the "Folk Home" authors, Ivar Lo-Johansson this was well described and the "hero" ended up cutting of his balls and drowning himself.
The specific product described in detail obviously was sold via "direct mail" and when my parents bought an old farm in Sweden 1962, I found a copy of this flyer from 1928 up in the attic!

That copy is now tucked away in a copy of said book at my mothers place. Unbelievable stuff and even more unbelievable that people believed in it.
