Wrong. Just look at the data below, they are from 1999, that is, prior to Turkey's lira crisis of Feb 2001(*) which subsequently warped them as a "distorting mirror". You can see that Turkey used to fare much better than many EU and would-be-EU countries. I suspect the 2001 financial crisis itself was engineered by those in NY and London who oppose Turkey's EU bid since a major result was the dramatic collapse of Turkey's GDP when expressed in euros.

Give me a break. Poland was the only nation with a GDP lower than Turkey's to get slotted for membership into the EU. And if I were the EU, I would do the same thing. Everyone knows that Poland's economy is gaining traction and has the possibility of becoming a real powerhouse. In addition, Poland does not have anywhere near the human rts. violations that Turkey has. Turkey has been practicing genocide against the Kurds; has killed more Kurds than Saddam has. Plus, it treats regular prisoners as if it were a police state. Frankly, I don't think Turkey is ready for admission into the EU. I think those who are pushing for it including Bush need to back off.
