And even if we accept the Spanish flu scenario, health conditions in 1918 were far worse in most of the world than they are now. Many people lived in squalor

I read this in the LA Times and almost choked over my morning coffee. This statement supposedly is to reinforce the idea that poor living conditions contributed to the mortality in the Spanish flu. In a "typical" influenza strain it would be the frail and compromised who succumb however it was the young and healthy who died in the Spanish flu and that's the main cause of alarm.

There were no flu vaccinations, no antiviral drugs, and containment by isolating infected individuals
It sounds like developing and vaccine AND the logistics of actually vaccinating individuals could be overwhelming. How could antiviral drugs be effective if there's only enough for a small percentage of the population?
This article seemed nothing short of propaganda. The levees weren't a problem until they broke and then they were. I would say that a real government would provide leadership and we all know that's sorely lacking. I wonder how quickly this dr would snatch some tamiflu for his family?
Meanwhile my grey parrot sits right outside my kitchen window. If Kiko shows any signs of illness it's tamiflu for me :)

Birds don't cough (although my grey parrot does because he imitates my husband). IF a bird sneezes or has any nasal discharge he is REALLY sick. Birds hide their illness because illness equals vulnerability to their prey.
