You may be entirely correct that this is not going to be any worse than any other new flu strain. Worst case scenarios rarely happen. In part because worst case scenarios are low probabilities and in part we actually take action to make sure that worst case scenarios don't happen.

On the other hand, we don't take action unless we're frightened about worst case scenarios. If the experts and media all printed up stories that said, this isn't going to worse than any other flu year, I think it's a good bet that it would be considerably worse than any other flu year. You have to frighten the public to death just to get them off their butts to get a flu shot and even then it's not a majority.

Without the "alarmists" would Bush have had a pow-pow with the phrams? Would Congress be taking any action on indemnifying the pharms? Where would we be in vaccine development without the alarmists?

IMO, we need alarmists. Without them, we [government, research, industry and the public] wouldn't do anything until the 2nd wave hit. And then it would be a lot worse than any other flu year.
