If he can do this, you're right, it's a great buy at some point....I'm not at all sure he can do it outside of bankruptcy (especially with GM now assuming DPH's pension liabilities). I think the maneuvering over the last few days was designed to give him an exit strategy, we'll see if it works. Alternatively, a safer play would be to buy the bonds, in the event of BK you'll get some equity....if no BK then you get a nice high yield and a probably rebound in the price of the bond as the stock rises.
