Your ignorance is only exceeded by my own! Technical Analysis (to quote from Pring, Technical Analysis Explained, 1991) is "the art of identifying trend changes at an early stage and to maintain an investment posture until the weight of the evidence indicates that the trend has reversed." Moving averages, relative strength, volume and other indicators are devised from the daily stock trading data to give some likelihood of trends. The use of TA can be witnessed on the 56 point TA thread where Doug R does it repeatedly and successfully over and over. Unfortunately his application of it is not widely known.
