NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors on Wednesday said they have charged former Refco Inc. (NYSE:RFX - News) Chief Executive Phillip Bennett with securities fraud over hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions owed to the company by an entity he controlled.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York made the announcement.

New York-based Refco announced Bennett's removal as chairman and chief executive on Monday, and said its financial statements since 2002 should not be relied upon.
