"McCain’s most obvious problem is his age," I agree. "but if he got the nomination, I think his VP would be decided for him." I think you've got it backwards --- to WIN the nomination he'll need to signal his intentions, or outright 'partner-up' with someone. A Powell, or practically any Southern politician he'd care to name would probably do it.
