A prayer is a technique to get all members of the team to focus on a single idea that all are part of a team with a common goal.

I appreciate the need to achieve that objective. I might buy your argument about prayer but for two things.

The first is that are plenty of alternate references to get a team to focus. How about reminding the team that the opposition stole the mascot last year or beat them badly last year or insulted the cheerleaders last year? Or reminding the team that the they have a shot at the championship if they win? Why does it have to be a prayer? It doesn't.

The second is that it obviates one of your stated objectives--"that all are part of a team with a common goal." You want to use a reverence that not only doesn't resonate with some members, it excludes them. A good coach will find something that works for everyone on the team, that pulls the whole team together, rather than fragment it.
